Local Entrepreneur Wastes Weekend on Completely Useless Project

So it's Monday. Again. Shocking, I know. The weekend flew by faster than a caffeinated tribble, and here we are facing another week of possibility disguised as overwhelm.

Y'all, I need to confess something embarrassingly nerdy that happened this weekend. I spent SIX HOURS meticulously arranging and rearranging and RE-rearranging a database of storylines from Star Trek: Voyager.

Yes, you read that right. Not updating my website. Not creating content. Not even doing my taxes (sorry, accountant person). NOPE. I was categorizing whether Tuvok's eyebrow raise in Season 3, Episode 12 constituted significant character development or just Vulcan sass.

I mean, WHO DOES THAT? (Me. I do that.)

What's worse? I couldn't even tell you why it felt so freaking urgent. Like somehow the fate of the universe depended on my perfect categorization of Captain Janeway's coffee references. The planet would simply COLLAPSE if I didn't finish this completely unnecessary project that absolutely nobody asked for.

Thandor on his first day at the Come Wright Inn. He tried to sort the coffee cups by star sign, roast profile, and emotional energy. We’re sending help.

But here's the thing, my shoulder-shaking friends... While I was deep in my nerdy shame spiral, I had a realization about Pattern Iinterruption:

Sometimes the most powerful way to break through is to completely disrupt your normal patterns.

We get so caught in our routines – arranging and rearranging the small stuff (hello, my Voyager database) that we miss the chance to create that pattern-breaking moment that actually moves our missions forward.

This is exactly what I teach as Maneuver 7 in the Epic Engagement Manifesto – Pattern Interruption is the Secret to Getting Attention.

When we're stuck in our comfort zones, obsessing over details nobody else will notice, we're missing the chance to create the unexpected moments that truly capture people's attention.

We're too busy organizing our digital sock drawers to do the bold, unexpected thing that would actually get results.

What in the fuzzy foot hell is 'left sock energy'?

So here's your Monday motivation, served with a side of tough love:

What's YOUR Star Trek database? What busy work are you hiding behind that feels important but isn't actually moving the needle? What pattern do you need to INTERRUPT to create something genuinely attention-grabbing?

This week, I dare you to:

  • Identify your unnecessary obsession (we all have one)

  • Set a timer for how long you're allowed to mess with it (hint: way less than six hours)

  • Create ONE pattern-interrupting action that would actually drive results

As for me, I've put the Voyager database in a temporary time-out. Captain Janeway would be so disappointed in my priorities, and frankly, she scares me more than my actual deadlines.
